October Newsletter Message

Aloha,

Good news for everyone who lives, works, and spends quality time in Waikīkī: the comfort station at Kūhiō Beach Park reopened last month, thanks to the Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR). The restrooms are open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Let’s all kōkua to ensure it remains clean and operating smoothly for years to come.

As you know, this comfort station has faced a number of mechanical, electrical, and vandalism-related challenges that resulted in repeated closures. I know how frustrating this has been for residents, businesses, workers, and visitors who rely on these facilities. I’ve shared many of those frustrations while also recognizing that getting the facility safely and reliably back into service required navigating some complex challenges.

Throughout this process, my office remained engaged with DPR and the Waikīkī Business Improvement District (WBID) to advocate for solutions and identify ways we could help provide additional resources. I’m grateful that, even when the path forward wasn’t always easy, everyone continued working toward the same goal: restoring this important public amenity to our Waikīkī community.

While reopening the comfort station is an important step forward, we also want to make sure there is a backup option available should the facility need to temporarily close for repairs or maintenance in the future. That’s why I included funding in the FY27 Budget for a temporary restroom structure, such as a restroom trailer, that could be deployed in partnership with WBID. This is to help ensure the community continues to have access to restroom facilities even if the comfort station has to close again — in which case we’ll need you to urge the City Administration to use the funds for a temporary restroom.

This reopening is also part of a much larger effort to invest in Kūhiō Beach Park and the future of Waikīkī. As one of Hawaiʻi’s most important economic and community hubs, Waikīkī deserves public spaces that are safe, clean, welcoming, and well maintained.

I want to extend a sincere mahalo to DPR Director Laura Thielen and the entire DPR team, as well as WBID President Trevor Abarzua and his team, for staying committed to this effort and working collaboratively through the challenges along the way. Their partnership has also been instrumental in advancing the broader revitalization of Kūhiō Beach Park, including the $1 million community investment made possible through Hilton Grand Vacations.

There were certainly challenges in getting to this point, but I’m grateful that we kept the conversation going, continued looking for solutions, and ultimately moved forward together. That spirit of collaboration is how we make meaningful progress for our community. Mahalo to everyone who raised concerns, shared feedback, and remained patient through this process. I’m glad to finally be able to share this positive update with you.

With aloha,

Tommy
