SAVE THE DATE: Hahaʻione Town Hall Meeting

INFORMATION

Date: Wednesday, June 25, 2025

Time: 6:00 PM

Location: Kaiser High School Cafeteria

WELINA MAI KĀKOU,

I’m excited to invite you to a Community Town Hall meeting at Kaiser High School cafeteria on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, 6 p.m., to share your thoughts on important issues affecting our streets and neighborhoods throughout Hawaiʻi Kai. As a part of this important conversation, I’ve invited representatives from Kamehameha Schools to join us so that they can hear directly from you about what matters most to East Honolulu residents.

With the land leases for JAIMS and other local businesses along Hawaiʻi Kai Drive expiring in 2028, residents and families living in the surrounding community have expressed to me that they want to ensure any future development reflects our community’s values, the ones we worked so hard to highlight in the East Honolulu Sustainable Communities Plan. Together, we must protect the things that make our home so special: our scenic view planes, continued safe access in and around Haha‘ione Valley, our precious natural environment, and of course the overall quality of life we all enjoy. This is our opportunity to come together, learn more, and make our voices heard in shaping a respectful, sustainable path forward.

Finally, with graduation season in full swing, I’m sure many families are celebrating this sigificant milestone with their loved ones. Please remember to drive safely, make smart choices, and look out for one another. This season is time to celebrate, but your safety – and the safety of others – must come first. Hoʻomaikaʻi Class of 2025!

Mahalo nui loa,

Tommy

Community Improvement Updates

Working for you to address concerns, enhance services and improve lives

Addressing Feral Cat Population

I have been working with the Hawaiian Humane Society and the Department of Transportation Service to establish a Trap-Neuter-Return-Manage (TNRM) Agreement which aims to improve cats’ lives while addressing overpopulation. Managing these colonies is critical in order to reduce the population gradually and humanely.

Kamiloʻiki Speed Mitigation

The City has awarded a design contract to address excessive speeding along Hawaiʻi Kai Drive near Kamiloʻiki Elementary School. DTS is seeking community input on which traffic calming measures will be most effective and make the most sense to keep our residents safe.

Emergency Repairs to Bridges

I am excited to announce that the rehabilitation work at Hawaiʻi Kai Drive, Keahole Street, and Wailua Street bridges is nearing completion. Mahalo to the public for your cooperation and to the repair crews for making Hawaiʻi Kai a safer place to live!

Honoring Maunalua Bay

The beautiful new ‘Maunalua’ sign welcoming residents and visitors at the corner of Hawaiʻi Kai Drive and Kalanianaʻole Highway reflects our community’s deep cultural heritage and connection to the land long before Hawai’i Kai became what it is today. Mahalo to Malia Lum-Kawaihoa Marquez and her team for preserving Hawaiʻi’s rich culture.

Koko Head Range Improvements

The Department of Parks and Recreation will be performing several safety improvements at Koko Head Shooting Range, such as replacing the sidewall between the pistol and rifle ranges and installing handwashing stations, to ensure the health and safety of shooting enthusiasts.

Koko Head Riding Stables

We appropriated increased funding in the City’s 2026 capital budget to allow the Department of Parks and Recreation staff to make necessary changes and improvements to East Honolulu’s only public equestrian riding stable and facility.
