Ways to Engage

Honolulu City Council meetings enable Councilmembers to receive and consider public input before making decisions on city issues.

Public attendance is welcomed and encouraged at all Council meetings. Express your thoughts and opinions on legislation at meetings by submitting testimony, or keep the Council informed of additional matters that require attention by contacting your councilmember.

Public Hearings at Honolulu Hale

Public hearings are held to gather the public's input on a matter so that the public interest and sentiments guide Council decisions.

For example., some of these decisions rely strongly on public hearings before final Council action can be taken, including:

  • City’s executive and legislative budgets;

  • Real property tax rate;

  • Proposed improvement district projects;

  • Zoning ordinances; and

  • Oʻahu General Plan, Development Plans, and revisions or amendments to these.

You can watch all Council hearings on ʻŌlelo TV on Channel 54 and online on Honolulu City Council TV.

Citizen participation in our government is vital to a healthy, vibrant democracy that serves the people.
