January 2026 Message from the Council Chair

HAUʻOLI MAKAHIKI HOU KĀKOU,

I’m so honored to ring in the New Year with the highest of hopes for our community, and the continued health and happiness for all of our residents, families and friends. I’m pleased, with this issue of our district newsletter, to recognize the easternmost part of District 4; the people and communities of Maunalua or Hawai‘i Kai.

Hawai‘i Kai is made up of welcoming and tightly knit residential neighborhoods, a wide array of recreational hotspots and thriving businesses, and more than 30,000 engaged residents who really do define the character of this unique Oʻahu community. I am honored to represent their interests, and have worked hard along with my team to make foundational improvements for our East Honolulu neighbors.

Of note, I’m committed to protecting the peaceful and welcoming vibe of our residential neighborhoods from Kalama Valley to Portlock, making our parks and beaches more accessible and enjoyable, ensuring the safety of our residents and their families in our schools, streets and oceans, and preserving the sanctity and health of the natural and cultural resources that are so important for our future.

I have worked alongside Livable Hawai‘i Kai (Maunalua) Hui to ensure our values are reflected in thoughtful planning, fought alongside the Department of Housing and Land Management to preserve critical lands and resources in perpetuity, and demanded that the Department of Planning and Permitting help to preserve and protect the traditional feel of some of our most visible areas and thoroughfares. Because at the end of the day, East Honolulu is a very special place, and it is my kuleana to be your voice, and to protect your interests – and that is an honor I am eternally grateful for.

As we begin the New Year, I want to thank all of you, in every part of District 4, for your commitment to making life better in so many ways. This year brings new opportunities and new chances to create meaningful change, and my team and I intend to explore, work hard and take advantage of every one of them. As always, it is a privilege and honor to represent you and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Mahalo nui,

Tommy
