September 2025 Message from the Council Chair

Aloha mai kākou,

Without question, the cornerstone of a thriving and effective democracy is your participation. As social activist and filmmaker Michael Moore once pointed out, “democracy is not a spectator sport, ” but a participatory event which works only if we all care deeply enough to stay informed, develop educated opinions, and give our input in important matters.

That’s why I’m so excited to share that the HNL Docs website has been completely revamped to make it easier than ever for you to stay informed and engaged with what’s happening at the Honolulu City Council. I believe that when our community has access to clear, timely information, we can make better decisions together and that’s exactly what this update is designed to provide.

This updated platform puts transparency and realtime-accessibility front and center – helping you track bills, resolutions, and other important items that impact District 4 and the island as a whole. The best part? It’s simple to navigate and built with you in mind. A new “Trending” tab helps you see the most talked-about measures at a glance, City Communications are easier to find, and signing up for custom email notifications is quick and straightforward. You choose what you want to receive:

  • Bills & Resolutions: Sent within 2 hours of publication

  • Communications: Sent at the end of the day

  • Agendas: Sent at the end of the day, with committee-specific options

  • Tracked Measures: Sent at the end of the day when your tracked items are on the agenda

All you need is a myHawaii account to log in and manage your preferences. My goal is to ensure you have the tools and information you need to stay engaged and have your voice heard. I hope you’ll explore the new HNL Docs, set your notifications, and join us in shaping Honolulu’s future.

Mahalo,

Tommy
