Honolulu City Council Statement on the Salary Commission
April 6th, 2026
“The Salary Commission is an independent commission of industry professionals charged with reviewing and setting compensation for both the City Administration and the Legislative branch. In 2024, voters approved Charter Amendment No. 4 with 84 percent support, which removed Councilmembers from the compensation process and placed compensation under a formula-based, capped structure administered by the Salary Commission. Councilmembers have no role in determining their own compensation under the current Charter. Questions about the methodology or calculation should be directed to the Salary Commission.” – Council spokesperson.
