Statement on Makiki Community Garden Fencing Project
May 15th, 2026
“I was surprised and disappointed to hear recently that the Makiki Community Garden fencing project would not move forward. After I fought to get funding in the city’s budget last year, and the Administration approved the project, I was told that the fence would be constructed this year. I even visited the site in October 2025 with the Department of Parks and Recreation to discuss specifics about the fencing.
I spoke with Mayor Blangiardi yesterday about how devastating this delay is to our community. He has assured me that the project is a priority, and he and I are exploring potential remedies. I will continue to strongly advocate for the community until the gardeners have a safe space in our neighborhood. “ - Councilmember Scott Nishimoto
